Bringing Journalism Education to San Diego

Shine connected female students of Morse High School in San Diego with local professional women in journalism. Over the course of three weekends at UC San Diego and multiple after school sessions, 27 high school students learned from journalists how to be ethical reporters and smart consumers of the news. After first learning about the Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics, the participants practiced spotting fake news. The students also received hands-on experience in reporting and news writing, while professional journalists gave direct feedback on their interviewing and writing skills.

These students will create their own Active Voice chapter at their school and cover how a massive budget cut will affect their peers. Look out for activevoicesd.com in the fall!
